Ntufam Mba Ekpezu Ukweni, Senior Advocate of Nigeria has chastised President Mohammadu Buhari over his comment on the rule of law and national security.
Speaking on phone in Calabar, Ukweni said that such comment shouldn’t have come from somebody who was a beneficiary of the rule of law. “It is unfortunate that President of Nigeria could say that rule of law should give way for National security. It is embarrassing that our President operating under the rule of law and in a democratic setting could say such a thing,” he regretted.
He explained that, “The courts are working, the legislatures are in place, the executives are in place and people are going about their normal duties, law enforcement agencies are in place working, then the President said that rule of law should give way for national security, I don’t know what he wants the rule of law to give way to,” he stated. “Because if the rule of law is to give way, he himself would not be there at the first instance. That is what he should know, that the military mentality should give way, it is that military mentality that has to give way because Nigeria is operating a constitutional democracy.
“Rule of law makes things work properly including the economy. It is unthinkable for President of a country like Nigeria who himself is the beneficiary of the rule of law to come out and say rule of law should give way for national interest. Nigeria is not in any war, it is quite embarrassing, and not acceptable,” he fumed.
