The vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Peter Obi, speaking through his media aide, Mr Valentine Obienyem has alleged that some individuals were behind the call by a northern youth group for his removal.
Obienyem said those behind the call were merely looking for a way to force the presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to drop him, after having failed to find any fault in him. A northern youth group had on Tuesday at the residence of former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo called on Atiku to drop Obi or lose their support.
Though Obienyem failed to mention the names of those responsible, he insisted that his boss’ nomination was well accepted by Igbos and Nigerians as a whole. He said, “Immediately the Presidential flagbearer of the PDP, His Excellency, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku announced the choice of Mr. Peter Obi as his running mate, joy was universal. “After careful and painstaking analyses of his past, they(Nigerians) submitted that he(Obi) is humble, hardworking, knowledgeable about the economy, aware of the myriad of problems of the country, detribalized and possessed of centripetal notion about the unity of the country.”
“Obi has been busy preaching the unity of the country and how good governance will solve the problems in Nigeria, caused by cumulative years of leadership failure that make the protest under review suspicious. Obienyem added, “Why protest in Ota? Who is behind the protest? What does the project intend to achieve? Is it true that the planning of the protest was revealed almost a week ago? Why is it that when you have failed to see any fault in Obi, you are bent on inventing one?
“We do not need such a distraction now. What we need is joining of hands together as we collectively seek solutions to our problems.”
