Jose Mourinho appeared to make a less-than subtle dig at the Manchester United hierarchy in the wake of their 3-1 defeat to West Ham United. Felipe Anderson and an own goal from Victor Lindelof gave the Hammers a 2-0 lead going into the second-half before Marcus Rashford pulled a goal back.
But it was to be in vain for the Red Devils as Marko Arnautovic finished smartly past David De Gea to give the Hammers all three points. While Mourinho’s team selection left many people confused, it was the post-match interview he gave to BT Sport which also intrigued listeners.
In an apparent dig at the lack of transfer activity, Mourinho said: “Congratulations to the scout that found the 21-year-old kid, Diop. He was a monster. “He dominated everything in the duels.” Much was made of Mourinho’s failure to capture a marquee centre-half signing in the summer, despite his obvious desire to bring one in.
Moves for Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng were all mooted – before ultimately fell short. The Portuguese’s position at Old Trafford may soon become untenable given the way the season has started. Defeat in east London marks United’s worst start to a season for 29 years.
