Milan Skriniar, Kalidou Koulibaly and Joachim Andersen targeted as part of summer overhaul

Manchester United have shortlisted three defenders to address their defensive woes, according to reports.

The club’s top targets are believed to be Inter’s Milan Skriniar, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and Sampdoria’s Joachim Andersen.

Skriniar, 24, and Andersen, 22, are developing into top centre-halves in Serie A, while Koulibaly is regarded as one of Europe’s best defenders.

Inter are in talks with Skriniar over a new deal, but he is aware of United’s interest and Andersen is also a target for Tottenham.

Landing Koulibaly, who is rated at £100million by Napoli chiefs, could prove difficult after he signed a five-year deal with the club last August.

The Independent claim United are determined to sign a leader in defence before the start of the 2019/20 season, with Skriniar’s Old Trafford arrival the likeliest.

Former Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho failed in his pursuit of Toby Alderweireld last summer, and Spurs extended his contract to 2020 with a £25million buy-out clause at the start of the year.

Victor Lindelof has been interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice centre-back and has partnered Eric Bailly and Phil Jones during the Norwegian’s tenure.

United have shipped 35 league goals this term and their defensive frailties were exposed by Paris Saint-Germain in a 2-0 Champions League last-16 first leg defeat on Tuesday.

And the score could have been more if it wasn’t for David de Gea’s heroics.

Chris Smalling and Jones have recently signed new deals, so bringing in Skriniar, Andersen or Koulibaly could throw Bailley’s future into doubt.
