Anthony Martial reveals his relationship with Jose Mourinho has always been positive after he starred in the dramatic 2-2 draw against Chelsea. The French forward grabbed two second-half goals to put Manchester United on the brink of victory at Stamford Bridge, before Blues midfielder Ross Barkley levelled things up in the last minute of stoppage time.
Mourinho has been openly critical of the 22-year-old in the past, most recently when he left United’s pre-season tour of the United States to witness the birth of his child, but the pair were smiling and hugging yesterday afternoon. “Things were not tense between us to begin with,” said Martial.
“We have a player-coach relationship and I hope that we will continue like that and bring Manchester United as much as possible.” Martial, who is yet to agree a new contract with the club, has led United’s resurgence and eased the pressure on Mourinho with his recent goalscoring form.
He has struggled to earn a regular place in the Red Devils starting line-up during Mourinho’s reign, however he looks set to start the Champions League clash against Juventus on Tuesday after scoring three goals in two games. “We were not doing well,” he said. “However, we worked hard and this sort of match enabled us to show that we are a good team. “We want to continue with another good game against Juventus on Tuesday. “[The goals] have done me the world of good. However, ultimately, I am disappointed. We deserved to win but we shipped the goal in the last minute and it cost us.”
