Defending champion, Real Madrid dumped out of Champions League

Defending champions, Real Madrid have been dumped out of the Champions League by Ajax after succumbing to an embarrassing 1-4 loss at home.

Madrid have won the Champions League three times consecutively but the departure of Manager Zidane and superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo has unsettled the club and made it ordinary.

Madrid had won the first leg at Ajax 2-1 and everybody expected them to wrap-up the victory at home, but it became a nightmare as the once feared Madrid became a weakling, mauled 4-1 by Ajax.

Madrid came into this game on the back of two successive defeat at home to Barcelona in the Copa De Rey and El-classico, losing 3-0 and 1-0 respectively.

Strikers, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema have been toothless for long, unable to score and fill the vacuum Ronaldo left behind which is now too big to fill.

Trailing 2-1 from the first-leg, Erik ten Hag’s side stormed into an aggregate lead after just 18 minutes through forwards Hakim Ziyech and David Neres.

The electric Dusan Tadic, provider of his side’s first two goals, then added a brilliant third as he whipped an effort into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Chasing a fourth consecutive Champions League triumph, Real looked to have gained a lifeline when Marco Asensio scored with 20 minutes remaining.

But Ajax midfielder Lasse Schone scored a spectacular free-kick just two minutes later to leave Santiago Solari’s side requiring three goals to progress, BBC reports.

Gareth Bale, jeered by fans in Saturday’s defeat by Barcelona, was dropped by Solari but struck the post after emerging as a 29th-minute substitute.

Real saw their miserable night compounded as Nacho was sent off in injury time for a second bookable offence, as Ajax became the first team to overturn a 2-1 first-leg home defeat in the Champions League.
