Manchester City have dismissed reports they tried and failed to sign Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi. The Citizens have been linked with Messi ever since Sheikh Mansour bought the club in September 2008.
These rumours increased more when Pep Guardiola took charge in the summer of 2016 and City’s chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak was quoted in a Spanish newspaper saying the club once made an offer for Messi which was rejected. “We asked Guardiola to talk to him, we offered him triple the salary he has at Barcelona, but he never accepted,” Mubarak was reported as saying. However, City have since rejected these reports.
“We deny the veracity of these quotes,” a City spokesman said. Messi worked under Guardiola for four seasons at the Nou Camp which saw Barca win 14 titles including two Champions League trophies. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s current contract at the Catalonia club runs until the summer of 2021.
