Cherries edge past Eagles after moment of madness from Mamadou Sakho

Junior Stanislas’ 87th-minute penalty saw Bournemouth earn a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at the Vitality Stadium. A brainless foul in the box by Mamadou Sakho gifted the hosts the three points after Patrick Van Aanholt had cancelled out David Brooks’ early strike.

Eddie Howe’s men have made a decent start to the season but were hit with a 4-0 drubbing at Burnley last week. But they were a completely different team this time and had the lead inside five minutes when Brooks latched onto Callum Wilson’s pull-back before striking the ball beautifully in-off the bar from the right.

Palace woke up after that but failed to fully penetrate the Bournemouth goal in the first-half. Max Meyer’s 20-yard drive, which was comfortably saved by Asmir Begovic, was their best effort before the break. They were level ten minutes after the break, however, when Van Aanholt latched onto Wilfried Zaha’s through ball before cutting inside and crashing the ball into the roof of the net with his right foot.

However, the hosts had a right to feel aggrieved as replays show the Eagles’ left-back was stood in an offside position when he received the pass. Callum Wilson could have regained Bournemouth’s lead on the hour but the striker blazed over Josh King’s knock-down on the spin. But he really should have scored on 82 minutes when put clean through on goal by Ryan Fraser but Wilson could only fire straight at Wayne Hennessey.

Hennessey then made a smart save to keep out Dan Gosling’s header as the game appeared to be heading for a draw. However, Mamadou Sakho’s stupid elbow on Jefferson Lerma gave the Cherries an excellent chance to win it from the spot. Junior Stanislas stuck away the penalty moments after coming on as a substitute as Bournemouth secured the late win.
