Barcelona have reached an agreement to sign Arthur from Gremio, the LaLiga club have announced. The agreement allows Barca to sign Arthur, the Brazilian midfielder, in July 2018 for a fee of £26.7m plus around £8m in add-ons. Arthur, full name Arthur Henrique Ramos de Oliveira Melo, has caught the attention of Europe’s biggest teams with some exceptional displays for Gremio in his homeland.
Since breaking into their first-team in 2016, Arthur has established himself as one of the finest young midfielders in South American football. He has won the Brazilian Cup and the Copa Libertadores with Gremio, and has represented Brazil at Under-17 and Under-20 level.
The 21-year-old has been called up to Tite’s senior squad on several occasions, though has not yet made his debut. He is considered a wildcard for selection in Brazil’s squad for this summer’s World Cup. An all-round midfielder, Arthur has been praised for his ability to aid his team in both the attacking and defensive phases of play. He is remarkably fit, has an excellent passing range, and always looks to receive the ball as he wants to dictate play from the middle of the park.
