Arsenal legend, Martin Keown, has identified Leicester City’s Jannik Vestergaard or Crystal Palace’s Joachim Anderson as the defenders the Gunners should have signed instead of Ben White.
Arsenal signed White for £50million this summer but the England international was not at his best for the Gunners as they were defeated 2-0 by Brentford in the Premier League on Friday night.
White started alongside Pablo Mari in a new-look back four, but he struggled to deal with the physical threat offered by Brentford’s Ivan Toney as he lost a worrying 50% of his aerial duels against the striker.
“What Arsenal need is people who can defend. You look at it now and Vestergaard was available and he is on his way to Leicester. He’s 6ft 4 or 6ft 5 and I am pretty certain he would be dealing with those balls coming into the box so recruitment is all important,” Keown told Stadium Astro.
“There were other central defenders available, at £50m he [Ben White] could still probably prove to be a good signing but you have got the likes of Andersen signing for [Crystal] Palace,” Keown said.
“So, you take your chances. Of course the manager [Mikel Arteta] is part of that and you are then hoping they are going to put the performances in and you need a central defender for all occasions and tonight that showed a glaring weakness in Ben White’s game.”
