United must sack him and spend £200m in January

Micky Gray has called for Manchester United to sack Jose Mourinho and spend £200million in the January transfer window to rectify their woeful start to the season. The Red Devils were convincingly beaten 3-1 by West Ham United on Saturday afternoon in a week of discontent.

Rumours of a fallout between Mourinho and Paul Pogba seem to have reached boiling point when training footage emerged of a tense moment between the two in the wake of a humbling defeat to Championship side Derby County. The defeat at the London Stadium means United have made their worst start to a season for 29 years, and Gray thinks the time for a change is necessary.

“I’ve said it before, he has got to be under serious, serious pressure now,” Gray said on talkSPORT Matchday Live. “And if they are going to make a change, they’ve got to make it before January. “Because in the January transfer window, and I’ve probably never said this before about Man United, but they have to go and spend at least £200million.

“They’ve fell so far behind, they don’t even look like a top six side.” In three of his previous four appointments, Mourinho has endured a third season collapse which has resulted in him losing his job. In his second stint at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea sacked the Portuguese after public spats with Eden Hazard and Diego Costa and an awful defence of their Premier League title.

And Gray, who played for Sunderland and Leeds United during his career, believes the decision to play Scott McTominay at the centre of the defence ahead of more experienced options signals the beginning of the end. “I think he is losing the plot. How can you do that?” Gray continued.

“They’ve got other centre-halves they could actually put onto the field if doesn’t like Linedlof is not playing very well. “But to leave McTominay in the back four…it just smells of Jose Mourinho’s third season again.”
